Abstract
In order to investigate the bacterial contamination of indwelling intravenous polyethylene catheters of adult patients admitted to St. Mary¢¥s hospital, 39 samples were examined from January through September 1974. The distal 2cm of polyethylene catheter was cut off at the time of it¢¥s removal from the veins and put into culture tubes containing 1 ml of physiological saline to prevent desiccation. The samples were cultured for isolation of microorganisms.
The results of the study were as follows;
1) 14 out of 39 samples revealed bacterial contamination; 2 samples each with Mima polymorpha, Bacillus substalis, Herellea vaginicola, Aerobacter aeroginosa and 1 sample each with Aicaligenese faecalis, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella pneumonia. Staphylococcus aureus, Tetracina and Gamma streptococci, total 10 types.
2) The average indwelling hours was 127.3 samples of 48 indwelling hours revealed non-contaminant and samples with longer indwelling hours revealed contaminated.
3) Effects of antibiotics mixed into infusion solution on indwelling catheter contamination revealed non significant by P>0.05 level (X¢¥=1.463, df=1).
